SCRIPTURE: Luke 11:53-12:3

53 When he went outside, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile toward him and to cross-examine him about many things, 54 lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.

A Warning against Hypocrisy

1 Meanwhile, when the crowd gathered by the thousands, so that they trampled on one another, he began to speak first to his disciples, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops.

While Jesus’ warning against hypocrisy may have been directed more towards the disciples and their future ministry work, the timing of this passage in the lectionary feels a little more than coincidence in some ways. Over the past months (and even beyond) hypocrisy seems to be falling out of the sky. From politicians to celebrities and almost anyone else in-between, the ghosts of the past are making themselves known. From old tweets to news quotes and other media platforms, the amount of hypocrisy that seems to be flooding out has turned many people’s worlds upside – both those guilty of the hypocrisy, as well as others within that person’s life sphere.

And while these resurfacings of comments and opinions made in the past have caused some deep divisions across our country and the world, they have also lead to some changes and new discussions that I believe will continue to lead to positive change and new possibilities. Hopefully, as things like this continue to be brought to light, we can continue to grow and learn and connect with each other which leads to things getting better for everyone.

Where have you seen hypocrisy lately? How does it make you feel? How do you think we, as humanity, can be better about hypocrisy in the world?

God of all knowledge and truth, we recognize that despite our best intentions and efforts, we all hold some level of hypocrisy in our lives and the truths we claim. Help us to focus on and share the ultimate truth – the Good News of Jesus Christ and your love and grace for all creation. In your name, we pray. Amen.
