SCRIPTURE: John 14:25-26
25 “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.
Kenneth O. Gangel writes in response to these verses of Scripture that “The Holy Spirit reminds us of truth that Jesus taught. In the case of the disciples, it was an immediate application to their spiritual memories. In our case, it is assistance in understanding and applying the Word of God. In their lives and ours, constant awareness of the Spirit’s presence is a daily practicality.”
Being constantly aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit, according to Gangel, should be a “daily practicality.” But I wonder how successful we are at being aware of that presence. Life is busy, life is chaotic, life is demanding, life is a constant barrage of interactions, and being pulled in different directions. Even though the Holy Spirit’s presence never dissipates, we need to be more active in listening for that presence, feeling that presence, soaking in that presence. I can say that there are several specific moments I can recall of the Holy Spirit’s presence in my life, both during my time in ministry and before. But I also know that there have been countless other moments that I have not recognized as the presence of the Holy Spirit, or at least not in those initial moments. Either way though, it has always been through the Holy Spirit that I have grown in my understanding of Scripture and my relationship with God.
Can you think of specific moments in your life where you clearly felt the presence, and maybe actions, of the Holy Spirit? What things about those moments convinced you of the Holy Spirit’s presence?
Loving God, you never abandon us, even when we fall away or turn away from you. After sending your Son, Jesus Christ, to save the world, you then send us the Holy Spirit. And it is through that Spirit that we grow in our knowledge and understanding of you and our relationship with you. Help us to always be aware and searching for the presence of the Holy Spirit, carrying an enthusiasm for learning and growing. Amen.
