Pastor’s Reflections – December 2019

Advent is a season of hope and anticipation. In light of that reality, I would like to share with you
some news from our district conference this year that I believe gives us the opportunity for hope in the mission work we do here at Centreville United Methodist Church.

2020 Ministry Shares Jubilee
At this year’s District Conference, our District Superintendent announced that 2020 will be a year of Jubilee for all Greater Southwest District churches. At its October meeting, members of the District Leadership Team approved moving forward with a plan to release churches from paying District Ministry Shares in 2020. This was done with the hope that churches would use the funds they would normally contribute to underwriting the costs of District efforts to organize, equip and engage churches in Southwest Michigan to invest in a mission or outreach program. Churches are being invited to try something new, expand existing ministries, or partner with other United Methodist Churches in their area. At next year’s District Conference (tentatively scheduled for November 21, 2020), congregations will have an opportunity to share what they did with the funds they invested during the Year of Jubilee so that we can all celebrate and be inspired.

We’re keeping the parameters of this broad so that each congregation can discern its own 2020
vision. The updated District Ministry Shares amounts are here (https://

Our suggestion is to identify that line item in your local church budget as something like “2020 Jubilee.” When it comes time to process statistical table year-end reports in January of 2021, your Finance Committee can place a zero-dollar amount in the space reserved for District Ministry shares.

In the meantime, dream some God-sized dreams. Let the Holy Spirit guide your church to seek out new ways to witness to the presence of Jesus Christ at work in the world through acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion.
