Pastor’s Reflections – October 2019

THUMP! “Hey, did you hear that?” THUMP! THUMP! “There it is again!” THUMP THUMP BUMP THUMP! “What gives? What is that?” THUMP THUMP THUMP CRASH! “AH!!!!!!!”

As the season changes and we begin to engage Fall, the days become shorter, and the nights seem to get darker. Most people don’t really like the dark that much. Our history tells us that the bright light is good, and the cold darkness is bad or evil. October being the month when we celebrate Halloween seems to embody this very well. Halloween is mostly thought of as a night of fun for children, getting candy and dressing up. But this season has not always been a celebratory one. The darkness used to, and for many continues to, cause fear and uneasiness.

But we know monsters aren’t real, don’t we? Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, werewolves, and zombies – they are all just silly Hollywood characters, right? Well, that depends on who you ask. For some people, monsters are VERY real and VERY dangerous. If we look back at Scripture, we can find several mentions of monsters and scary things that the people back then struggled with, and some people continue to struggle with today. So, beginning this month, we are starting a new sermon series titled, “Things That Go Bump in the Bible”!

For the next four weeks, we are going to be talking about some of the truly scary and terrifying things we find in the Bible, and also what we are REALLY afraid of. There are many things in Scripture, and in life, that we may be afraid of, but sometimes we need to ask ourselves why and what is at the core of that fear. I cannot wait to see you Sunday mornings for this new, and fun, sermon series!

God’s blessings,

Pastor Michael
